Evolution can be seen as the process of diversification
and transformation of living organisms in response to their environment.
The ones that manage to adapt will survive and produce descendants, the
others will gradually become extinct.
Nowadays the humanity doesn’t face too many challenges from the environment.
The nature can be mastered by myriad of objects and routines that have
been developed throughout the centuries. However, these same objects and
routines shape the evolution that is happening on a different level – in
our society.
From the moment we are born until the very end of our lives, we are provided
with social ‘roles’ (businessman, politician, clerk) that define
our social self, and various objects (clothes, makeup, gadgets) that reinforce
these roles. Those who manage to ‘grasp’ a clearly defined
role (be it a middle-class corporate clerk or an offbeat snowboarder) get
the reward: secure existence and guarantee of survival.
The “Evolution of Species” is an attempt to scrutinize this
process. It is a physical theatre performance about a man who cannot evolve
without society, but is then caught into an intricate double-bind: in order
to be accepted he has to become ‘someone’. He acquires the
objects and habits that define his role, enable him to stand up and become
a member of the society and get the security that comes with it. But
is it the best way to evolve? The audience is invited to watch this process
from the outside and find the answer...
Reviews:
"The stage is empty, slowly a naked figure crawls across the stage he
tries to get up yet fails. This struggle to stand, repeats again and
again and again. Dmitirys performance is the first ten minutes of mankind,
struggle, growth, realisation, repetition. SNAP, hes a robot and now
the repetition of his work, the routine of computer data input, accept
or fail, evolution what a bummer! "
